Waves at Dusk

Spotted Owls

One June evening a bit after sunset, I went to a forested gulch above Big River and started making little mouse squeaks with my lips. Soon this pair of Spotted Owls glided in and sat in the trees watching me. They seemed totally fearless, after a while one even flew up to my face looking for the mouse. After getting bored with me, they settled down together and started nuzzling and preening each other, making soft cooing sounds all the while. I was amazed to see how affectionate they were with each other, and I watched until it was too dark to see.

Raindrops with Roses

Strand of Dewdrops

The roses on the Mendocino Headlands reach peak bloom sometime in June. In early June 2007 I’d seen a dew covered spider web in a rose bush; I could see the flowers through each drop and it looked like the most beautiful necklace. There was a breeze though, and the light was terrible; I couldn’t get any good pictures. By the time the next foggy morning came around in July, most of the roses were gone. I went out anyway, and found this web with perfect drops, but only blackberry leaves behind. I solved the problem by picking a rose and putting it behind the web and below, just where it would show through each drop. I held a mirror above my camera to reflect more sunlight onto the rose and the drops.

Mushrooms on a Twig

Sunset at the Mendocino Headlands

Mid July sunset, looking west from the northern part of the headlands. By this time of summer most of the wildflowers are gone from the flat areas above, but they’re still going strong on the cliff faces. The purple flowers are Seaside Daisies; the yellow ones are Seep Spring Monkeyflowers.

Acorn Woodpecker

Sunset from a Sea Cave

This was on the northern side of the Mendocino Headlands, at the end of a very calm summer day. The sunset was really pretty, and I liked the way it looked from inside the cave.

Dragonfly with Dewdrops

Tunnel at Little River

I took this picture looking out toward the ocean from the bottom of the sinkhole behind the Little River Cemetery. The afternoon light was shining through the waves from behind, giving that blue green color, and the rock of the tunnel was lit by the reflections from the back wall of the sinkhole. I used a long exposure to get the soft look in the waves.

Waves at Sunset

Sunset at Ten Mile Beach

I took this picture in late December, when the sun was setting very far to the south. The grass in the foreground is European Beachgrass, a non native. People from the state park service have been trying to chop and burn it all out, but it seems to grow back very fast.

I grew up in the mountains outside of Willits CA, and I’ve liked exploring the woods and watching wild creatures for as long as I can remember. I became interested in photography in 1986, when I was nine years old, and convinced my parents to help me buy a good camera system. I was home schooled, and at that time my family lived in an area with no other kids, no tv, and no telephone. Since I didn’t have much else to do, I was able to spend a lot of time out hiking and taking pictures of birds and animals. I started selling my photographs when I was about eighteen, and have been earning my living at it for the last few years. I now live near Mendocino, still very much enjoy photographing beautiful animals and amazing places, and plan to continue doing it for the rest of my life.
